Opossum Removal in Austin & Central Texas

Biological Information

The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) is the only marsupial native to North America. Commonly found across Central Texas, including Austin, Marble Falls, and the Highland Lakes area, these nocturnal animals are slow-moving, solitary scavengers known for their distinctive white face, prehensile tail, and opposable thumbs on their hind feet.

Opossums are omnivores with an opportunistic diet that includes fruits, insects, carrion, pet food, garbage, and even small rodents or snakes. They have a short lifespan—typically 2 to 4 years in the wild—and reproduce quickly, often having 1–3 litters a year with up to 13 young each time. Baby opossums, called “joeys,” spend their early life in their mother’s pouch before riding on her back.

Why Opossums Become a Nuisance

While opossums are generally harmless and even beneficial as natural pest controllers, they become a problem when they:

  • Take shelter under homes, decks, sheds, or in attics
  • Scavenge from pet food bowls, compost bins, or trash cans
  • Die inside wall voids or crawl spaces, creating foul odors
  • Cause noise disturbances at night with hissing or scratching
  • Leave droppings and urine that can contaminate areas and attract other pests

They’re expert climbers and squeeze through surprisingly small openings to access attics or crawl spaces.

Our Removal Process

At The Wildlife Management Company, we use humane, effective methods to trap and remove opossums from residential and commercial properties. Once removed, we offer comprehensive exclusion services to seal entry points and prevent future intrusions. We also provide odor control, cleanup, and repairs for any damage caused.

Serving Austin, Bee Cave, Llano, Burnet, Marble Falls, and Horseshoe Bay, our team of wildlife biologists combines high-tech detection tools with time-tested expertise.

Fun Facts About Opossums

  • Opossums “play dead” (a behavior called thanatosis) when threatened—complete with drooling, a dropped tongue, and a foul smell to fool predators.
  • They are immune to rattlesnake venom, which allows them to prey on venomous snakes.
  • Opossums have 50 teeth—more than any other North American mammal.
  • They groom constantly and are less likely to carry rabies than most wild mammals due to their low body temperature.
  • Their prehensile tails help with climbing, though adults rarely hang from them.
  • A single opossum can eat 5,000 ticks in one season, making them an ally in fighting Lyme disease.
